Deblurring is rebuilding, not just sharpening

A classic "sharpen" slider only boosts the contrast around edges that are already there, which is why over-sharpening looks harsh and full of halos. PicReviver works differently: an image model trained on millions of photos reconstructs the fine detail a blurry image lost, so a face, some text or a texture looks genuinely resolved rather than just crunchy.

How to unblur an image

There's nothing to configure. Drop the image in, the model runs on our GPU, and you compare the result with a before/after slider before downloading. If the image is also small, unblurring and upscaling happen in the same pass, so you get a bigger and sharper copy at once.

1. Open PicReviver and drop the blurry image in.
2. Let the AI rebuild the sharp detail on our GPU (usually seconds).
3. Slide the handle to compare before and after.
4. Pick your output size and download; the image is then wiped.

When it works best (and when it won't)

Be realistic about what any restoration tool can do. PicReviver rebuilds and sharpens detail that is still present in the photo; it is not a clone-stamp or inpainting editor. Fine cracks, creases and small blemishes usually soften noticeably because the surrounding detail gives the model enough to work with, but a chunk that is physically gone, such as a torn-away corner or an area dissolved to blank paper, can't be invented from nothing. Very heavy motion blur or a deeply out-of-focus shot also has hard limits.

Practically, expect a real improvement on soft, low-resolution or lightly-blurred images, and manage expectations on a badly smeared one. Curious how the reconstruction actually works under the hood? We wrote an honest explainer on how AI photo restoration works.

"Unblur" means two completely different things

The word covers two techniques that behave nothing alike, and knowing which one you are using changes how much you should trust the output.

• Deconvolution is the mathematical approach: if you know exactly how the image was smeared (the blur kernel), you can partly reverse it. It genuinely recovers information that is still in the file. It also needs that kernel to be known and consistent across the frame, which almost never holds for a real handheld photo, and it amplifies noise badly.
• Generative reconstruction is what a modern model like Real-ESRGAN does, and what runs here. It has learned what sharp photos look like, so it predicts the detail that a sharp version of your photo would most likely have had, then draws that in.

The second approach looks dramatically better, and that is exactly why it deserves a warning label: the crisp eyelashes, brick texture or lettering in the result are the model's best guess, not measurements recovered from your file. On most family photos that distinction does not matter at all. On some photos it matters enormously.

When a plausible reconstruction is not good enough

Do not lean on an unblurred image where the exact pixels carry meaning:

• Licence plates, serial numbers, house numbers, meter readings. A model will produce confident, legible characters that may simply be the wrong characters.
• Text in documents and contracts. Sharpened small type is where invention shows up first: letter shapes drift towards whatever the model considers likely.
• Identifying a person. A rebuilt face can look sharp and convincing and still be a slightly different face. For anything official, work from an original photo instead.
• Evidence of any kind for an insurer, employer, police report or court. Submit the untouched original; an enhanced copy is an interpretation and can be challenged as one.

A cheap sanity check: read the result next to the original at the same zoom. Any character, edge or pattern that is legible in the result but genuinely absent in the original was invented. If the answer matters, that is your signal to stop and find a better source photo. And keep the original file: every pass here starts from what you upload, so you always want the untouched version safe on your own disk. Nothing is kept on our side, the upload is deleted right after processing and the result is wiped within 45 minutes.
