Why low-resolution photos look soft

PicReviver runs its restoration models on our own GPU rather than a rented cloud service, which is exactly what lets us keep it free: up to five photos at a time, no account, no watermark and no trial. Your upload is deleted the moment it's enhanced and the result is wiped within 45 minutes, so nothing is stored, shared or used to train anything.

A low-resolution image simply doesn't hold enough pixels to look sharp once it's viewed larger than its true size, so faces go mushy and edges turn fuzzy. PicReviver enhances it two ways at once: it rebuilds the missing fine detail with an image model, and it enlarges the photo (up to 4×, capped at 8000 pixels on the longest side) so you actually have the resolution to print or crop.

How to enhance a low-resolution photo

Upload the small photo and the enhance pass runs automatically on our GPU, no settings to fiddle with. You compare the result and pick exactly how large you want the output, from a quick small copy up to full resolution.

How far you can push it

Enhancement adds believable detail, but it can't invent something that was never captured, so a 100×100 thumbnail won't become a poster-sharp portrait. A reasonable rule: the closer the original is to "real but small," the better the result. Be realistic about what any restoration tool can do. PicReviver rebuilds and sharpens detail that is still present in the photo; it is not a clone-stamp or inpainting editor. Fine cracks, creases and small blemishes usually soften noticeably because the surrounding detail gives the model enough to work with, but a chunk that is physically gone, such as a torn-away corner or an area dissolved to blank paper, can't be invented from nothing. Very heavy motion blur or a deeply out-of-focus shot also has hard limits.

How many pixels you actually need

"Low resolution" only means anything relative to what you want to do with the photo. Work out the target first, then you know how much enlarging you need, and whether the result can be honest.

Now do the arithmetic on your source. A 640×480 photo at 4× becomes 2560×1920: comfortably enough for a 10×15 print, not enough for A4 at 300 dpi. A 1200×1600 scan at 2× lands at 2400×3200, which is an A4 print. If the numbers don't reach your target, enlarging further doesn't fix it, it just spreads the same guess over more pixels.

Where the real ceiling sits

Two practical limits are worth knowing before you upload. First, very large inputs are scaled to fit before the model runs (around 2000 px on the long edge) so that a single job doesn't monopolise the GPU; the output still comes back large, up to roughly 8000 px. In other words: this tool is built to make small photos big, not to squeeze a little more out of an already-huge file.

Second, the smaller the source, the higher the share of the result that is invention rather than recovery. At 2× from a decent source, most of what you see is real detail, cleaned up. At 4× from a tiny crop, the model is writing most of the pixels. That is fine for a face across a room and misleading for a page of text.

The tell-tale places to inspect are text, brickwork, fabric weave, distant foliage and anything with a repeating pattern: those are where a model's guesses stop matching reality first. Check them at 100% before you commit to a print, and if you have a bigger or less re-saved copy of the original anywhere, start from that instead. A better source beats any amount of enlarging.

How much can it enlarge a photo?

Will a tiny thumbnail become high quality?

It'll improve, but there are limits: the tool can't invent detail that was never in the original, so extremely small images have a ceiling.
