Dust that is on the print when you scan it is in the file forever. But more old photos are destroyed by enthusiastic cleaning than by the dust itself, and the difference between the two comes down to about five minutes of technique.
You get the real result, not a blurry preview. Free means the full-size restored photo — the same file a paid tool would sell you.
Before the cleaning routine below, here's the downstream reason it matters: in the 40 days we've been measuring PicReviver's own uploads, the single biggest cause of a rejected file, grouped together, wasn't a torn photo or a bad scan — it was a scan that was simply too large. We logged rejections at 48, 57, 50 and even 103 megapixels, almost certainly prints scanned at a high DPI with the output size left on default, producing a file with far more pixels than the photo itself has detail to fill. Not one of the 528 uploads we measured sitewide in that period was rejected for its file size in megabytes — resolution, not storage, is what actually trips people up. The practical upshot: clean the print as below, then scan it at a sensible resolution (our own scanning guide covers what "sensible" means), rather than maximising every setting and hoping for the best. A cleaner, right-sized scan gets a better restoration result than a technically bigger one.
A photographic print is not a piece of paper with ink on it. The image sits in a wafer-thin layer of gelatin emulsion on top of the paper — soft, water-soluble, and easily scratched once it is more than a few decades old. Everything below follows from that one fact: dry is safe, wet is not, and pressure is the enemy.
So the goal is modest. You are removing loose surface dust and nothing else. Anything stuck to the print, embedded in it, or grown into it stays where it is and gets dealt with afterwards, in software, where a mistake costs you nothing.
Note what is missing from that list: canned air. It is high pressure, which drives grit sideways into the emulsion instead of lifting it off, and if the can tips even slightly it sprays liquid propellant across your photo. A £6 rubber blower is both safer and, for one print at a time, faster.
Do not pull. Prints that have been wet and dried, or that sat under frame glass for thirty years, are bonded emulsion-to-emulsion and separating them by force tears the image in half. This is one of the few situations genuinely worth a professional conservator. If the photo is not irreplaceable, scanning it through the frame glass — cleaned, and angled slightly to kill the reflection — gives you a usable file today.
Never wet a mouldy print; moisture is what wakes mould up. Dry the photo out fully in a ventilated room away from the rest of your collection, then take it outdoors, put on a dust mask, and brush the dried spores off with a soft brush. What is left behind — the brown or purple staining where mould has eaten into the emulsion — is permanent damage, not dirt, and belongs in the software stage below.
Flatten before scanning, not during. Sandwich the print between two sheets of plain acid-free paper, put it under a stack of books, and leave it for a few days. Pressing a curled photo flat under the scanner lid instead is how you get a fresh crease straight through it. Never reach for a hairdryer or an iron to speed this up: heat curls and cracks the gelatin emulsion further, it doesn't relax it.
Self-adhesive "magnetic" albums from the 1970s–90s are a specific problem: the glue yellows and hardens with age and slowly bonds to the back of the print. Don't pull the photo straight off the page — that's exactly how the image layer stays on the album while you're left holding the paper backing. Work a thin, rigid edge (an old gift card corner works well) gently under one corner first, and move slowly along the edge rather than lifting from the middle. If it hasn't released after a minute of gentle work, stop rather than force it: if the photo is irreplaceable, scanning it in the album, cover sheet and all, beats tearing it to get it free.
Don't tape a tear, even temporarily. Adhesive on the front of a print is on the "what never goes on a print" list above for a reason, and the residue it leaves is harder to deal with later than the tear itself. Keep every piece, however small, in its own envelope, then scan the main piece and each fragment separately at the same resolution and orientation. Digital repair can reassemble and blend the pieces far more precisely than tape ever could, and a genuinely missing corner can sometimes still be rebuilt from the surrounding detail in software, something no amount of careful handling recovers on paper.
The scanner glass matters as much as the print does, and gets skipped constantly. A single speck on the glass appears as a bright white dot in the same spot on every single scan of that session — and white dots on a dark area are among the hardest marks to repair afterwards, because there is no surrounding detail to rebuild from.
Put a few drops of isopropyl alcohol on the microfibre cloth — never spray it onto the glass, where it runs into the scanner's electronics — wipe, then dry with a second clean cloth. Do it again halfway through a long batch: dust settles as you work.
Here is the part most guides get backwards. Scratches, water stains, foxing, fading and colour casts are damage to the emulsion itself. Nothing you can safely apply to a print will lift them, and everything strong enough to try will take image with it. Those marks are precisely what digital restoration is for, and they cost you nothing to attempt because the original stays untouched on your desk.
So: clean the loose dust, scan it properly at 600 DPI (see how to scan old photos), and hand the rest to the tool. Scratches and creases, water damage, tears and missing corners and faded colour all have far better odds as pixels than as chemistry.
How do you clean old photos before scanning?
Dry, and in that order: hold by the edges, blow the loose dust off with a rubber blower, sweep once with a soft brush, and wipe with a dry microfibre cloth only if the print is glossy. Then clean the scanner glass with isopropyl alcohol on the cloth.
Can I use water or alcohol on an old photo?
No. The image sits in gelatin, which softens the moment it gets wet, and solvents dissolve the dyes of a colour print. Every liquid in this guide is for the glass, not the photo.
What if the photos have mould?
Dry them out first, then brush the spores off outdoors with a mask on. Never wet them. The staining left behind is permanent damage and a job for digital repair.
Should I remove scratches and stains before scanning?
No — scan them as they are. Anything abrasive enough to shift a scratch removes image with it, while software can attempt the same repair a hundred times without touching the original.
How do you get a photo unstuck from an old adhesive album?
Slowly, and never by pulling straight up. Work a thin rigid edge gently under one corner and along the glue line; if it resists, stop rather than risk tearing the print, and scan it in the album if it won't release cleanly.
What do you do with a torn old photo before scanning?
